Siana Springs-family vacation spot

Siana springs are a tranquil tented camp outside of the national reserve. On the site of the old, well-known cottars’ camp, Siana springs are the closest Mara camp from Nairobi and are popular with people driving from the capital. Although it is some distance from the busy Sekenani gate, you are likely to encounter game close to camp without necessarily driving into the reserve.

Being outside the reserve allows Siana Springs to offer a variety of walking and ding experiences in the bush. You can go on bird or game walks. You might pass elephant on foot, or enjoy sundowners from a high rock looking down at game in the plains. After dark you can go on night game drives.

The 20 hectares Siana Springs property ranges from flat grassy spaces with random thorn trees, to areas of lush dense growth around water from natural springs. It is these springs which give the camp its name and which attract animals to the area. The veld grass has been cut between the tents, but there has been no attempt at manicured lawns or planted gardens-the natural bush has been retained. Around the camp stretch wide panoramas of the Masai Mara-golden distances, green acacia and rocky hills.

There are 38 tents which have been arranged in three separate groupings: acacia, bamboo and palm. Each of these groups has its own butler who will bring drinks, clean shoes and so forth. The tent furnishings are large, solid and heavy-chunky beds and tables custom-made from pale logs of blue gum. Electric fans provide coolness. The bathrooms are impressive, with super-large shower heads and a separate, private toilet. Each tent has a veranda, and some command wonderful wide-open views of the Mara while others have a more intimate view of nearby trees and bush. The tents are well spread out over the extensive grounds-some are a long walk from the main buildings. An electric fence provides security. Best views: tents # 10 and 8

The casual dining area, from the cottar’s camp days, is built in dark wood and is open on one side. Siana springs have a rustic, bush flavor. There is extensive use of canvas and stone. Canvas-covered doors bring the feeling of camping to the public areas, and there are electric hurricane lamps. The overall image is of solid, no-nonsense camping in comfort and style. Every night the traditional campfire is lit

The Siana camp also has open sided land rover vehicles for game viewing. These are handled by very experienced drivers who have a lot of knowledge on the birds, animals and the Masai culture in the Mara.

Siana Springs is quite about 16 km from the Masai Mara national reserve. The rough terrain also means more time is spent on the roads than normal. For this reason it is advisable to book a full day or two of game viewing in the Masai Mara. This means you will be able to have a full day game drive with a break for lunch in one of the other lodges inside the reserve.
